Koh Samui is noted for its
beaches and most Koh Samui hotels are situated around its lovely beaches.
Located in the province of Surat Thani, 80 kilometers from Thailand's eastern
coast is the beautiful island of Koh Samui. It is one of many islands in the Ang
Thong National Park. Koh Samui is one of the most populated islands in
Thailand, predominantly due to the hectic tourism industry here. It was always
popular with fisher folk and coconut growers, but the population has been
steadily on the increase ever since those first few intrepid backpackers made
their way here on a boat.
The island has many beaches but
the most well known ones are Chaweng Beach and Lamai Beach. Chaweng Beach has
most of the accommodation and it boasts of several hotels and resorts. It is
the longest beach on the island besides having the most entertainment and
eateries with the nightlife and revelry active and thriving. Chaweng Beach also
has a few backpackers' hostels but most of these are on Lamai Beach. Both
Chaweng and Lamai Beaches are popular and very vibrant. This is where the
tourist crowds come for some sunny times on golden beaches. For more quiet and
solitude, head toward the beaches on the west coast or toward the northern
beaches. Bophut Beach has a small fisherman's village. This has increased
traffic to Bophut as day trippers head here to watch the fisherman and visit
the village. The Big Buddha statue on the beach of the same name adds to the
serenity of this beach and emanates a tranquil nature.
Experience a Wonderful and Thrilling Vacation
Koh Samui has a huge party every
full moon day. The parties are wild and hedonistic with the revelers coming
from near and far to join in the fun. The all night music, dancing and
barbeques take place on Koh Phangan.
There are few Wats at Koh Samui.
The most famous of these, Wat Khunaram, has the mummified remains of a monk who
was a temple elder long ago. Wat Phra Yai is built around the Big Buddha
statue. This golden statue is an imposing figure. This is the epicenter of the
Krathong festival celebrations at Koh Samui. On the southern side of the island
is a 200-year-old house which is an excellent example of early Chinese
architecture.
Families travelling to Koh Samui
can be assured of excellent choice of hotels and resorts. A good family
friendly resort will offer pools, children's clubs and activity centers,
fitness centers and even spas. They might offer to arrange excursions to the
local Butterfly Farm and monkey shows or longer trips for diving and
snorkeling. The best diving around Koh Samui would be around the Ang Thong
National Park. The waters around Koh Samui contain the marine park with its
many coral reefs teeming with marine life and vividly colored fish darting in
and out of the corals and plants. Diving is possible year round and every Koh
Samui hotel will easily organize a diving or snorkeling day trip.
